PVC cables are often used under challenging conditions. In automotive engineering, for example, they are often exposed to high temperatures, while in underground installations, they are exposed to widely varying stresses. These stresses accelerate the aging of the cables – a process that leads to embrittlement, cracking and finally even failure of the insulation and sheathing materials. If the conductor is exposed, there is a risk of a short circuit and possibly fire.

This aging is an oxidative process – as part of the stabilization measures, antioxidants are therefore in charge to control the aging process.Bisphenol A (BPA), an organic chemical substance that is used to produce polymers including polycarbonate and epoxy resins, can also be utilized as a very effective antioxidant in PVC resin, as pre-stabilization in plasticizers or as part of the PVC-stabilizer formulations. It enhances the thermal stability of a PVC compound necessary for the processing such as extrusion of cables and provides additional chemical stability of the final cable product during its life cycle. BPA use in plastic additives has been restricted in the EU Under the European REACH legislative, however, Bisphenol A was classified as SVHC (Substance of Very High Concern) – it is toxic for reproduction and has endocrine disrupting properties with effects to human health.

Registrants reassessed the use of Bisphenol A in plastic additives and this was resulting finally to the statement of ECHA (European Chemicals Agency): “The industrial and professional uses of Bisphenol A as anti-oxidant for processing polyvinylchloride (PVC) as well as the use of articles made of PVC are not any more covered by the joint chemical safety report of the lead registrant.” Baerlocher as one of the leading producers of Calcium-Zinc based stabilizers for cables, had developed and offered Bisphenol A free alternative stabilizers already in advance for the change in the PVC cable market. Problems of undesired discoloration of PVC compounds by cross reactions of different antioxidants had been solved in a joint effort to harmonize the antioxidant usage in all parts of the recipe compound.

The EU cable industry finally changed over to non-Bisphenol A solutions. Cable manufacturers that intend to export their products to European Union countries must therefore also ensure that they use Bisphenol A free formulations of their Calcium-Zinc based stabilizers.

Turkish legislation will follow
The Turkish chemical control legislation KKDIK (“Turkish REACH”) is in principle following the EU REACH legislation and it requires a registration for the substances that are manufactured or placed on the Turkish market until 31.12.2023. Based on recent regulating developments in the EU it is most likely that the use of Bisphenol A in Turkey as an additive in cables will also be restricted. The Turkish cable market will have to change their PVC compound recipes to Bisphenol A free versions very likely until end of 2023.

An open discussion with customers and an in time start of approval procedures will ensure a save and controlled stress-free changeover from Bisphenol A to appropriate alternatives. Baerlocher offers these stabilizers with the same performance as the Bisphenol A containing formulations for a wide range of applications to PVC cable manufacturers in Turkey.

The Baerlocher Group of Companies is a leading supplier for additives to the global plastics industry and a metal soap specialist for many non-polymer applications.
